Transceiver dissipates less than 275mW of power

GigOptix Inc. has unveiled what it claims as an ultra-low power SFP+ transceiver dissipating less than 275mW while running a full 10Gbit/s link over 100m. The SFP+ transceiver has been designed using GigOptix's ultra-low power HXT/R4101 VCSEL driver and transimpedance amplifier chipset.

The SFP+ transceiver aims to reduce power consumption of data centre interconnects. According to the company, the solution's system level architecture enables power savings of greater than 60 percent. The device that is now shipping in production volume was created in partnership with Energeia Innovations and PCL Technologies. The SFP+ transceiver programme was executed through the GigOptix's Virtual-Vertical alliance approach, which the company claims to offer the best cost-performance advanced solution. "We implemented this highly innovative product to address data centre customer demand not only for high performance but also for low power consumption applications," noted Andrea Betti-Berutto, CTO at GigOptix.
