Sigma Designs Inc. reveals the CG2210, a HomePlug AV chipset that claims to work faster than other HomePlug AV solutions and Wi-Fi when handling small packets—giving it the lowest latency.

According to the company, the CG2210 platform operates on 70 per cent more outlets and runs 31 per cent faster over surge protectors as compared to competing brands. This home video networking solution adheres to the EuP 2013 energy conservation guidelines. The CG2210 offers HD quality video across electrical wiring inside the home. It also supports TR-069 and eliminates the need for an expensive external CPU.

The CG2210 platform incorporates Sigma's patented ClearPath technology and has lower footprint and power consumption. In addition to increased performance by 15 per cent, the product is fully interoperable with IEEE's 1901 draft Standard and future products designed to the standard.

"Sigma is pushing power line reliability and performance to a new level," said Gabi Hilevitz, VP and general manager, home connectivity group at Sigma. "Now, with the CG2210, service providers can more reliably deliver HD quality IPTV traffic to virtually any outlet in the home. Plus, the CG2210's extra performance in difficult infrastructure environments will help retailers benefit from lower return rates."

HomePlug solution

The technology allows consumers to access, store and share a variety of content around the home without having to install new wiring. Sigma noted that while usage is primarily focused on broadband data, HD programmes, VOD, multi-room HD DVR recordings, VoIP, and streaming of HD video, music and photos, the gaming market is emerging as a prime case study for the use of HomePlug AV technology.

With the CG2210, gamers and others interested in expanding their Internet footprint in the home can connect through any electrical outlet in the house. Only two power line adapters are needed—one connected to the router/gateway and plugged into the AC outlet and a second one connected to the game station. Results showed that the CG2210 is about 40 per cent faster than Wi-Fi, while improving the stability and experience—two critical concerns for serious gamers, the company added.

Sigma Designs CG2201 HomePlug AV chipset is now in volume production.
