The MPEG group is focussed on setting up a new Internet video coding standard to achieve better compression than MPEG-2 and possibly be comparable to what AVC Baseline Profile offers.

The MPEG group has recently issued a call for proposals for Internet video coding technologies to devise the new Internet video coding standard that may become the default video codec for Internet applications.

Patent owners must be prepared to grant royalty-free licence to make, use and sell implementations of such a standard. The proposals are due in October 2011 and will be evaluated at the 98th MPEG meeting in Geneva. MPEG expects the standard to be complete by July 2013.

MPEG has also announced that the unified speech and audio coding, which is built upon previous MPEG audio standards technology, has progressed and has reached the final draft for international standard. The new technology adds the capability to create a single, unified coder. Tests for the said standard included speech, music and speech mixed with music, and covered a wide range of bit rates (from 8kbit/s–96kbit/s), as well as both mono and stereo operating points.

The new specification targets applications where low-bit-rate transmission or storage is necessary.
