Strategy Analytics reports that global smartphone applications processors revenue showed an astounding 108 per cent y-o-y growth in Q1 2011 to reach Rs.7,500 crore ($1.68 billion) with Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Samsung, Marvell and NVIDIA featuring in the top-five revenue share rankings in Q1 2011.

According to this Strategy Analytics report, it is said that competitive dynamics in the smartphone OEM and OS landscape continue to influence applications processor vendor fortunes and this is reflected in the Q1 2011 rankings.

"After leading the smartphone applications processor market for several years, for the first time Texas Instruments (TI) lost its unit shipment leadership crown to Qualcomm in Q4 2010 and this trend continued in Q1 2011," commented Sravan Kundojjala, senior analyst of Strategy Analytics. "Qualcomm strongly leveraged its broad integrated processor portfolio to address multiple price tiers of the smartphone market.

Strategy Analytics estimates that Snapdragon processors accounted for 22 per cent of Qualcomm's total smartphone processor shipments in Q1 2011 and helped the company to maintain its average selling prices (ASPs)."

"2011 is proving to be a highly competitive year for applications processor vendors as smartphone OEMs are opening up their supply chains to multiple vendors. In addition, the smartphone market continues to fragment into multiple tiers, favouring those vendors with broad processor portfolios," said Stuart Robinson, director of the HCT service from Strategy Analytics. He added, "Strategy Analytics continues to believe that these dynamics will influence applications processor rankings in the next few quarters."
