Samsung Electronics and software company Linaro have tied up to develop the Origen development board, an open source mobile platform that uses Samsung's Exynos 4210 chipset targeted at tablets, smartphones and other connected screens focussing on cutting-edge performance, stunning graphics and the ability to power HD displays.

According to Linaro, the platform and the software and tools that come with the platform will enable its customers and the open source community to speed up the process of products development and reduce their time-to-market.

The mobile platform has multi-core Cortex-A9 CPU and multi-core Mali400 GPU and a 1GB of high end DDR3 memory.

"The Origen board and Linaro's provision of software and tools make it easier, faster and less expensive for developers and companies to develop high-end embedded Linux products," said George Grey, Linaro's chief executive officer.

For his part, Samsung Electronics vice president for System LSI Marketing Dojun Rhee said the partnership will enable developers to conveniently embed rich features on their mobile products.

The board integrates mobile features such as interfaces for HDMI, SD card, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Stereo audio, LCD, JTAG debug and camera. The Exynos processor is mounted on a small daughter board together with high bandwidth DDR3 memory to enable future upgrade options.

Source code downloads of the Linaro Evaluation Builds for Android and Ubuntu will be available in Linaro's website. The Linaro Evaluation Builds is built with the latest Linux kernel and toolchain. The board is priced below Rs.8,928.57 ($200).
