The opening of the R&D centre is seen as an important step for Renesas Mobile in leveraging the opportunities that Renesas Electronics and Renesas Mobile Corp. see in India.

Earlier this year, Renesas Electronics Singapore had opened a branch office in Bangalore aiming to deliver Renesas Electronics' global technology to India while also looking at doubling its sales in India to Rs.446.43 crore ($100 million) by 2012.

Renesas Mobile, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Renesas Electronics Corp., started operations on December 1, 2010 with the completion of Renesas Electronics acquisition of the Wireless Modem group of Nokia Corp. which provided proven wireless modem technology as well as the world-class R&D teams from the wireless modem group.

"Today Renesas Mobile India is a key R&D centre in wireless modem technology, performing leading edge technology development, as exemplified by the demonstrations in today's opening ceremony, where VAMOS calls (2G), HSDPA data transfer (3G) and LTE data transfer, were demonstrated with Renesas Mobile Corp. chipsets" said Tenhunen. "In addition to 2G, 3G, and LTE, Renesas Mobile India is performing core technology development within TD-SCDMA and TD-LTE technologies."

"Renesas Mobile India is contributing in every aspect of product creation from 3GPP standardisation, to system design, to implementation and customer support, and is a full-capability R&D centre," said Allan Frederiksen, managing director of Renesas Mobile India Pvt. Ltd. "Coming from Wireless Modem group in Nokia, we are proud to continue the development of our world-class technology in Renesas Mobile here in Bangalore", he added.
