Apple Inc. files patent infringement suit against Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd for allegedly imitating the look and feel of its iPhones and iPads, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Apple and Samsung have a long-standing relationship. Samsung makes chips for Apple on a foundry basis, including A4 and A5 processors, and supplies Apple with LCDs, flash memory and other products. Some analysts believe that Apple has been quietly qualifying foundry giant Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd as a foundry partner.

According to the Journal report, Apple filed the suit against Samsung April 15 in U.S. District Court in Northern California. The suit specifically names Samsung's Galaxy S 4G, Epic 4G and Nexus S smartphones, and Samsung's Galaxy Tab tablet.
