Switches deliver 1000x higher bandwidth

Broadcom Corp. debuts the StrataXGS BCM56440 switch series claimed to deliver 1,000x more bandwidth than legacy time-division multiplexing (TDM) based networks targeting upgrades to 4G networks.

The devices offer carriers a migration path to Ethernet-class performance and advanced services in the mobile backhaul network.

The BCM56440 switches are said to provide the industry's highest integration in its class, combining the functionality of up to seven off-the-shelf ASSPs into one 40nm CMOS devices, cutting BOM cost while reducing service provider capital expenditure on mobile backhaul equipment by up to 50 per cent. The devices also do away with network processing units (NPUs) and FPGAs, thus reducing overall development costs and time to market.

The BCM56440 switch series is based on Broadcom's Ethernet Edge switch for carrier access networks. It provides cost-effective, seamless transition for legacy TDM networks, and is suited for 3G and 4G mobile backhaul transport. The switches integrate features and functions such as switching, traffic management, timing, circuit emulation services, and memory. They provide a complete solution for all the parts of the mobile backhaul network, from small to very large port counts.

Representing the company's seventh generation StrataXGS series, the switches embed deep buffer and hierarchical Quality of Service in a single 40nm CMOS device. They provide a complete 1588v2 solution for boundary clock, ordinary clock and transparent clock. They feature energy conscious, low-power 40nm fabric for fanless operation. The switches also handle L2 switching, L3 routing, metro VPN tunnelling and access control lists.

The switches support VPLS, VPWS, MPLS-TP, PBB and PBB-TE tunnelling; and Ethernet and MPLS OAM in hardware to enable a complete host CPU offload. They also support synchronous Ethernet clock synchronisation supported on all ports.

The BCM56440 switch series is now sampling with production volume expected in Q4 2011.
