STMicroelectronics CEO and president, Carlo Bozotti shared his company's vision and plans for India with the media during his recent visit to the company's Indian headquarters in Greater Noida.

Presenting ST's results for 2010, Bozotti claimed that ST is positioned to achieve worldwide leadership in the two broad application areas that form the pillars of their vision: "Sense and Power" and "Multimedia Convergence". Bozotti said that ST is also well positioned to address the four key growth application areas targeted as focus areas for the Indian market:

Bozotti: ST intends to grow more than the market we serve, which is expected to grow in 2011 between 5 and 8 per cent. And, we intend to outperform it in 2011.

• Smart consumer devices (Set-Top Box, Digital TV, Tablets)
• energy management and energy saving (Lighting and Power Metering)
• healthcare and wellness
• trust and data security (Secure Microcontrollers and Smart Card Business)

The key priorities for the coming year included:

• First, a continuation in expansion and growth of customer base, with additional focus on Asia overall: Japan and Korea, where there are excellent opportunities for ST, as well as India. "In fact ST intends to grow more than the market they serve, which is expected to grow in 2011 between 5 and 8 per cent. And, as I said, we intend to outperform it in 2011," said Bozotti.
• Second, a focused but significant capital investment in capacity for MEMS that is micromachining, in smart applications for the Automotive field and in the U8500 smartphone platforms that they are developing within ST-Ericsson, their 50/50 joint venture for wireless applications, where they see tremendous growth potential.
• Third, after the completion of their restructuring, 2011 will be seen as the year of ST-Ericsson's transition, when the transformed, new product portfolio will start ramping from the second half of this year.
• Focus on breakthroughs with a number of new, innovative products, including: System on Chips for 3D and connected TVs; microcontrollers based on the Power PC architecture for automotive applications; "Twin MEMS"—combining gyroscopes and accelerometers either in a package or with innovative solutions; new MEMS families like active microphones and pressure sensors; advanced analogue products; the U8500 smartphone platforms and tablet platforms; and the thin modem platforms coming from ST-Ericsson.

Emphasising on the contribution of ST teams in India to the development of Embedded Software Platforms for all these products, Bozotti said, "But, of course, that is something that I don't need to remind you of because of the more than 2,200 people we have here in India—including 650 from ST-Ericsson—the vast majority are engaged in innovation, which means in new architectures, solutions and applications developments for our customers. Not only [does] Greater Noida together with Bangalore, make [it] our largest design centre outside of Europe, but 15 to 20 per cent of all ST and ST-Ericsson design activities take place in India," he said.
