STMicroelectronics Corp. grows its family of 32bit STM32L ultra low-power ARM Cortex-M3 MCU series for low-energy applications. Its 32bit STM32L series of MCUs with devices will now offer memory densities of 256KB and 384KB. This widens the series' Flash memory offering from 32KB up to 384KB.

The series is now entering into volume manufacturing and the first devices, offering 64KB and 128KB memory densities, are expected to be available in production maturity by the end of March 2011. STM32L series MCUs with 32KB memories will follow in Q2 2011.

The STM32L MCUs are ultra-low-power ARM Cortex-M3 MCUs offering 33DMIPS performance at 32MHz (max).

The series combines a dedicated low-leakage 130nm process technology with power-saving architecture to deliver energy-saving performance. Part of ST's EnergyLite platform of ultra-low-power products, the series enables designers to optimise performance, functionality and battery life, and to meet efficiency-related criteria such as eco-design targets. Additionally, for touch-sensing applications, the STM32L is supported by the availability of ST's third-generation STMTouch capacitive-touch-sensing firmware library, which now supports more than 200 devices within ST's 8bit STM8 and 32bit STM32 families.

ST also announced today that the STM32L's USB drivers are ready for use in Continua Health Alliance certified applications. Full certification is expected by the end of Q1 2011. The success of the USB interface in medical applications has led to standardisation and the development of a dedicated class of device called the Personal Healthcare Device Class (PHDC). This new class enables health-related devices, such as exercise watches, blood pressure monitors, thermometers, weighing scales and glucose meters, to connect to a host and ease the communication between individuals and their fitness coach, or patients and their doctor.

The MCUs are priced from Rs.73.39 ($1.60) for the STM32L151, with 32KB Flash in an LQFP48 package, to Rs.128.88 ($2.81) for the STM32L152, with 128KB Flash in LQFP100, for orders of 10,000 units.
