RFaxis reveals RF CMOS cellular solutions

RFaxis is set to reveal its RF solution roadmap in CMOS to address the challenges of the rapidly evolving multi-mode/multi-band cellular mobile device market with its portfolio of silicon-based single-chip/single-die RF front-end IC (RFeIC) for wireless connectivity applications at the 2011 Mobile World Congress.

These include a new series of CMOS-based GSM/GPRS-capable transmit ICs and unified RF front-end transmit solutions for the major existing and anticipated cellular standards such as GSM/GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA+, CDMA200/EVDO and LTE.

To support ubiquitous voice and data connections anywhere in the world for popular cellular mobile devices such as smart phones, tablets and mobile Internet devices, the RF industry has implemented RF front-end components that enable seamless transmit and receive of wireless signals based on 2G (GSM/GPRS/EDGE), 3G (WCDMA/HSPA/CDMA2000/EVDO) and upcoming 4G (LTE) standards, and at different region or carrier-specific frequency bands.

Unfortunately, these conventional RF front-end components, particularly the power amplifiers, are complicated, inefficient and costly. In fact, these conventional RF front-end components are mostly designed using expensive GaAs, and must be combined with CMOS-based control circuitry to meet RF performance and talk-time requirements from leading cellular device manufacturers.

RFaxis' mobility business unit unveils its roadmap based on its patent-pending RF Mobility architecture platform.

The roadmap begins with a family of CMOS transmit ICs comprised of linear power amplifiers optimised for best-of-class DG.09 current consumption as well as stringent EDGE/WCDMA/LTE linearity requirements.

Next on the roadmap are the new RFaxis RFM8006 low-band and RFM007 high-band CMOS transmit ICs that support both non-linear GSM/GPRS and linear EDGE/WCDMA/LTE operations. The RFM8006 is designed to operate over the frequency range from 698 through 915MHz, which includes the 3GPP FDD Bands 5, 6, 8, 12-14 and 17-20. The complementary RFM8007 is designed for the higher frequency range from 1,710MHZ through 1,980MHz, thereby covering the 3GPP the FDD Bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 9 and 10.

Following closely behind these ICs is the new RFaxis RFM8010 unified CMOS broadband transmit IC that will efficiently amplify transmit signals substantially for all operation modes (2G/2.5G/3G/3.5G/4G) and all frequency bands (700MHz to 2,100MHz) as required by existing and next-generation cellular mobile devices.
