Moving towards society-focused innovation

As applications for semiconductors have become diverse, the industry is moving from being largely technology focused to becoming more customer and application focused. We have seen a rise of application areas that were practically non-existent, whether in automobiles, consumer white goods or smart IDs to name a few.

The trend is now towards 'society-focused' solutions that will benefit not one section of consumers, but the community as a whole. Increased government spending in India on technology and infrastructure will also boost this trend. In India, we are seeing some great examples in the form of the Unique Identification (UID) project and the Bihar e-Shakthi project where semiconductors promise to play a pivotal role.

Overall, we are seeing four key trends that are driving growth for the semiconductor industry, globally as well in India.

Energy efficiency
With rising energy costs as well as greater environmental awareness among enterprises as well as consumers, energy efficiency is emerging as a criterion for making any purchasing decision. One example is the rising popularity of LED lighting for its obvious benefits—low energy consumption, longer life, high power factor. While adoption in the domestic market is yet to take off due to the prohibitive cost of LEDs, it is definitely on the rise.

An example in the automotive industry is the use of "eco-telematics" to improve traffic flow by providing drivers with advance notification on the best routes to take via GPRS. For electric vehicles, telematics systems can provide remote monitoring and diagnostics of electric car batteries to check the vehicle's "state of health," and optimise its "state of charge."

Connected mobile
As communication devices are becoming increasingly mobile, consumers are relying heavily on them for a wide range of functions. Technologies like Near Field Communication (NFC) are playing a role in this revolution. NFC-enabled mobile devices will allow consumers to store and access all kinds of personal data—at home or on the move. NFC technology can be used in numerous application areas such as transit, ticketing, payment, access, advertising and information download, mobile enabled transport, health and social care, connectivity.
