Jedec pushes for smaller SSD form factor standards

The Jedec Solid State Association reports that the JC-64.8 subcommittee for solid state drives (SSDs) will develop standards for SSDs for applications that require unconventional disc drive form factors, such as tablets and ultra-thin notebook PCs.

Jedec says that the need for such standards is driven by the rising demand for smaller CE devices.

"Deploying the first generation of SSDs in disc drive form factors leveraged the existing ecosystem and helped ensure supply chain flexibility," said Mian Quddus, chairman of Jedec's board of directors, in a statement. "But with tablet PCs and ultra-thin portable notebooks emerging in client as well as high-density enterprise systems, there is a growing demand for SSDs in smaller form factors and an urgent need for related industry standards."

Quddus urged all interested companies to participate in the development of SSD standards within Jedec. Information can be found on the organisation's website.

Jedec's statement quoted Joseph Unsworth, research director at Gartner Inc., as saying that with the right OEM support, embedded SSDs could outship traditional SSD form factors in mobile PCs by 2013.
