The Graduate School of Engineering of the École Centrale d'Electronique (ECE) in Paris, France has launched three new graduation options in its Masters' Programme. These are Transports & Mobility, Energy & Environment and Health Care & Technologies.

The first batch of students to graduate from these options is expected to enter the job market in the summer of 2011, with skills in information systems, embedded systems, telecommunications and networks. They will be equipped to offer efficient, comfortable and thrifty energy solutions for urban mobility, housing and medical supervision of patients.

Technologies which impact everyday life are becoming more critical in facing the challenges besetting the planet. Thus ECE is taking this step to bring opportunities to train for these technologies within reach of engineering students.

"Technology is not the end, it is the means. The goal is in solving highly complex problems. New technologies are serving the world because of the innovative solutions they bring to everyday life and to society as a whole," said Pascal Brouaye, president, ECE.

In the last academic year, ECE had 2,000 graduates who received 3000 internship offers and 5000 job offers. Many of the companies that offered internships or jobs showed an interest in graduates with some India connection.

For the 2010-2011 academic year, 10 Indian students are attending the Master in Engineering programme at ECE. They come from Anna University (Chennai), M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology (Bangalore), Amrita School of Engineering (Bangalore), Pune Vidyarthi Girha's College of Engg. Tech (Pune), SIES (Mumbai) and SRI Siddharta Institute of Technology (Tumkur).

The Transports & Mobility option focuses on dealing with the challenges of urbanisation. In 2006 the urban population reached the threshold of 50 per cent of the world population and this proportion is growing. In 2010, it reached 75 per cent in Europe. Thus, mobility in urban environment and inter-cities is a world challenge which needs efficient and secured transport solutions, thrifty in energy and greenhouse gases. Passenger information, their comfort and security, the optimisation of fossil as well as electrical energies consumption, the rationalisation of urban and inter-urban transport networks and the control and prediction of the traffic are issues for which a growing use of new technologies is of high importance. The success of the exporters worldwide will depend on the quality of the solutions proposed. Alstom, Thales, PSA Peugeot-Citroen, Vector, Brime &Toolnet intervene in this option, providing projects and sending professionals to teach the students.
