FET driver improves power supply efficiency

Texas Instruments Inc. debuts the UCC24610 Green Rectifier controller, a power management controller and driver for standard and logic-level N-channel MOSFETs aimed at low-voltage, secondary-side synchronous rectification.

The UCC24610 is said to improve power supply efficiency by as much as 5 per cent, and cut primary-side power loss in 5V AC/DC adapters and bias supplies.

The 600kHz rectifier offers micro-sleep current, automatic light-load management and synchronous wake-up features to help maximise efficiency. It uses drain-to-source voltage sensing to support flyback and LLC resonant converters and other power architectures, giving designers increased flexibility.

Other features and benefits of UCC24610 include small size and minimal external component count; system protection via device shut down of MOSFET if short or excessive "on time" occurs; design flexibility because it can be biased directly for a 5V output without external regulator.

The UCC24610 is available in volume in an 8-pin, 5mm x 6mm SOIC package. Suggested resale pricing is Rs.33.50 ($0.75) in 1,000-unit quantities. Easy-to-use evaluation modules include the 5V, 10W UCC24610EVM-693 daughter card and the UCC24610EVM- 563 5V, 25W offline DCM flyback converter.
