Motor-control module supports industrial Ethernet connection

STMicroelectronics (ST) offers the SPIMD20 module, a customisable high-end motor-control module that can handle brushless 3-phase motors up to 2kW. It is thus suitable to support industrial solutions such as multi-axis robotics, conveyors, packaging machines, and process automation equipment. It is compact enough to mount directly on the motor, and at the same time allows for a connection through industrial Ethernet.

Designed in collaboration with motion-control specialist Robox, the module combines ST's dependable high-performance semiconductor technologies, consisting of 1200V/40A IGBT power switches, and the TD352 gate driver. Two STM32 microcontrollers offer powerful processing engine capability for motor control and networking functions. Furthermore, a real-time communication interface supporting protocols such as EtherCAT and CANopen DS402 is also provided. Basic firmware supporting network connectivity and featuring PWM driving, current loop and speed-loop execution synchronised to the fieldbus is likewise available.

The module is firmware and logic customisable, enabling designers to fully control the motor-control algorithm and type of Ethernet fieldbus. Group VP and general manager, Systems Lab & Technical Marketing, Industrial and Multisegment Sector at ST, Matteo Lo Presti cites, "The SPIMD20 combines custom configurability, high performance, and the convenience of distributed control for the first time in an off-the-shelf module."

The SPIMD20 eliminates the usual project overhead of bringing up a custom drive. By mounting the 165 x 60 x 26mm module on the motor, designers also can distribute control for multiple motors.

The key features and benefits of SPIMD20 include: 800V maximum DC supply voltage; hardware Safe Torque OFF; safe architecture meeting IEC 61800-5-1; serial programming interface; position feedback via resolver or digital encoder; vibration analysis and thermal sensing; and on-board Flash of 2Mb plus support for removable memory card.
