Wireless connectivity solutions powered by coin cell

Texas Instruments Inc. (TI) unveils two low-power, short-range wireless connectivity solutions that claim to function using only a coin cell for over a year. The CC2540 single-mode Bluetooth low energy system-on-chip and the CC257x ANT network processor target consumer medical, mobile accessories, and sports and wellness applications.

Marketing manager for TI's low-power RF products, Volker Prueller says, "By operating on a fraction of the power used by traditional wireless connectivity technologies, engineers can now develop smaller devices with batteries that last for years." He says that the CC2540 and CC257x, combined with TI's existing low-power RF, WiLink, BlueLink and MSP430 MCU portfolios bridge the gap between the mobile and sensor worlds.

The CC2540 Bluetooth low energy SoC comes with an integrated controller, host and application in a 6x6mm package. Its flash-based device firmware may be updated in the field and data may be stored on-chip. It serves as a complete solution for low-power RF with fully embedded single-mode protocol stack, profile software and applications support. It claims reliable RF performance with link budget for long range (up to +97dB) and coexistence with other 2.4GHz devices. It is interoperable with Bluetooth 4.0 single-mode (CC2540) and dual-mode devices.

On the other hand, the CC257x ANT is a 2.4GHz network processor featuring a MSP430 host microcontroller, software and application support. It highlights optimised hardware and software integration utilising ANT-FS function and AES encryption support. It claims reliable RF performance with a link budget of +95dB.

The CC2540 Bluetooth low energy SoC is now in volume production and available in a QFN-40 package. Pricing starts at Rs.137.75 ($2.95) for 1,000 unit-quantities. The development kit, CC2540MINI-DK, is priced at Rs.4,622.91 ($99) which consists of a key fob with the CC2540 running the complete Bluetooth low energy demo application.

Meanwhile, the CC2570 (single channel) and CC2571 (eight channel) ANT network processors are currently sampling with lead customers in QFN-40 packages; volume production is scheduled for December 2010. Pricing starts at Rs.128.41 ($2.75) for 1,000 unit-quantities. Samples and development kits can be ordered on the TI website.
