3.75G wireless modem flaunts compact size

u-blox reveals a family of compact wireless modems, codenamed LISA, which are designed to provide wireless high-speed Internet connection targeting high-bandwidth applications such as mobile computing, car infotainment, telematics systems, handheld terminals and ultra-portable devices.

u-blox says LISA will also give secure data exchange to accommodate sensitive applications such as automatic meter reading, fixed wireless terminals, telehealth, remote displays and point of sales terminals.

CEO of u-blox, Thomas Seiler says, "LISA enables our global customers to design cutting-edge products that deliver a fast and secure broadband experience to consumers and professional end-users." He cites that LISA is ahead in terms of wireless modem size, power consumption and performance.

The modules offer high performance with uplink data speeds of up to 5.7Mbit/s (HSUPA) and downlink data speeds of up to 7.2Mbit/s (HSDPA) via UMTS/WCDMA technology. Moreover, it also supports quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE(2G). The module series is available in a compact 33.2 x 22.4 x 2.7mm surface mount package.

The family also includes other variants which support dual-band UMTS frequencies in EMEA/Asia and the Americas (900/2100MHz and 850/1900MHz), as well as versions dedicated to data-only applications. All LISA modules are maximised to operate with u-blox' GPS receivers via direct interface.

LISA succeeds the company's LEON 2G module, and is likewise layout compatible with it, permitting mounting of either module on the same PCB footprint.

Samples and evaluation kit shall be available in early Q2 2011. Operator and standards bodies' certification is currently in progress.
