LED drivers tout dynamic backlight control

Advanced Analogic Technologies Inc. reveals two LED backlight drivers that promise to reduce power consumption by half using content adaptive brightness control (CABC) and dynamic backlight control (DBC).

AnalogicTech said the AAT2868 and the AAT2869 are 1x/1.5x dual-mode, high-efficiency, low-noise, charge pump-based white LED backlight drivers that drive four constant current LED channels. They both feature two linear low drop-out (LDO) voltage regulators to form a complete lighting solution. They also boast of automated LED fading, which simplifies programming.

The AAT2868 has a pulse-width modulation (PWM) dimming input for external brightness and fading control. It works alongside the fully scaled 32-step LED current programmed using the AS2Cwire interface.

The AAT2869 has no manual PWM input but features an AS2C-based auto-dimming and fade-in, fade-out capability. Both backlight drivers continuously adjust the backlight current level in relation to the displayed image to save power.

The integrated dual linear LDO regulators, which may be used to power an extra display controller, CMOS image sensor, vibration motor, or other accessories, are independently programmable from 1.2V to 3V at a total load of 150mA each.
