Toshiba Corp. has extended its microcontroller portfolio by licensing ARM's ultra-low-power ARM Cortex-M0 processor to complement its TX03 Cortex-M3 processor-based microcontroller series.

ARM said in a statement that Toshiba, which has been an ARM partner since 1999, chose the Cortex-M0 as it "offered significant technical advantages, a broad ecosystem software development tools support and a future-proof solution through upwards compatibility with the Cortex-M family."

The Cortex-M0 processor claims to be the smallest 32bit ARM processor and consumes the least power. It features a low gate count and binary upwards compatibility with the ARM Cortex-M3 processor, allowing legacy 8bit microcontroller embedded applications to skip 16bit devices.
