Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) introduces the Blackfin ADSP-BF592, capable of 800MMACs/400MHz of performance, to its Blackfin family of microprocessors. Housed in a 9mm x 9mm 64-lead LFCSP package, the ADSP-BF592 integrates a digital signal processor and is targeted at portable medical products, audio devices, imaging products such as CMOS-sensor-based 2D barcode scanners and smart metering products in smart grid applications.

Richard Murphy, business development manager for Analog Devices' Processors-DSP Core Technology Group, said the BF592 "allows designers to incorporate sophisticated signal processing previously only feasible for higher-priced end products."

Key features of the BF592 include 800MMACs or 400MHz clock speed for more sophisticated algorithms; a low active power draw of 88mW at 300MHz and low standby power of less than 1mW for an 80 per cent power reduction compared to comparable solutions; and a peripheral set that includes two SPORTs, a PPI, two SPIs, four general-purpose counters and a factory-programmed instruction ROM block with the VDK RTOS and C-runtime libraries.

The BF592 is available in commercial and industrial temperature grades and is qualified for automotive applications.

The Blackfin ADSP-BF592 costs Rs.140.09 ($3) per unit in 10,000 unit quantities while an EZ-KIT Lite evaluation kit that includes an evaluation suite of ADI's VisualDSP++ development environment with the C/C++ compiler, assembler and linker is available for Rs.9,292.51 ($199). ADI also offers a Rs.7,004.40 ($150) Blackfin emulator (ADZS-ICE-100B).
