In-Stat predicts that in the next five years the number of Wi-Fi-enabled devices will increase from over 50 crore in 2009 to nearly 200 crore in 2014. Wi-Fi is becoming a mainstream networking technology and CE manufacturers are increasingly incorporating it into appliances, with Blu-ray players and recorders, e-readers and DTVs leading the trend.

Frank Dickson, VP of research at In Stat explains that "The reality of 802.11n-enabled devices being available is that many of the technical issues that constrained Wi-Fi adoption in video-centric CE devices in the past has been remedied. As a result, we expect the adoption of Wi-Fi in the living room to accelerate across all 'digital living room' CE, which includes STBs, game consoles, and other such devices, Wi-Fi-enabled devices will exceed 200 million [20 crore] units by 2014."

The analyst also noted that in 2013, shipments of mobile phones with embedded Wi-Fi are projected to exceed 75 crore units; Wi-Fi attach rates in e-readers will increase from 3 per cent in 2009 to 88 per cent by 2014; and of 2.9 crore digital picture frames to be shipped in 2014, 53 per cent will be Wi-Fi-enabled.
