Frost & Sullivan recently hosted an Executive Congress on LED lighting in India at the Hyatt Regency in New Delhi. It was an event to gather all involved in the LED industry supply chain to ponder on the obstacles that face the industry and efforts needed to smoothen the path.

On the occasion of this event, Frost & Sullivan released their report on the LED industry Indian LED Lighting Market at the hands of the chief guest, Saurabh Kumar, secretary, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). In his inaugural keynote, Kumar emphasized the need for focusing on energy efficient technologies and highlighted the various initiatives taken by BEE on its part for promoting technologies that enable energy conservation. He pointed out that BEE had identified LED lighting as one such technology and set up a panel under the auspices of National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) to study the issues pertaining to manufacturing, testing, and standardisation etc of LED lighting and to evolve recommendations to be dealt at policy and action levels. Kumar mentioned that the committee has since come up with a detailed economic analysis for LED lighting and has presented its report on its website.

Kumar said, "Lack of technical specifications for LEDs is the biggest constraining factor. Bureau of Indian Standards is still to come out with a standard. Some sort of specification as early as possible is needed. [Second constraint] is even if we have standards we still don't have a national level testing laboratory. Within this year setup the work of setting a national test facility for LEDs will start."

Central Power Research Institute will be involved in this effort. Yet another highlight of Kumar's speech was his announcement of an impending global tender for a million LED lamps to be called for in this financial year. He mentioned that they were looking to execute this tender in this financial year itself, BEE has taken the mandate of bringing out partial specifications too.

Kumar also spoke about the Super efficient Equipment and Appliances Deployment (SEAD) programme promoted by the US Department of Energy which aims at working with industry globally to identify and accelerate deployment of advanced efficient technologies in priority appliances. LED lighting is one of the appliances promoted under this programme of international cooperation for energy efficiency.

Research findings: V. Niju, deputy director, Automation & Electronics, Frost & Sullivan presented findings from their recent research of the LED lighting Market in India. LEDs are poised to replace conventional GLS, CFL and HID lamps in many key applications like street lighting, indoor and outdoor lighting apart from other niche industrial applications. LEDs have also found increasing adoption among automobile manufacturers in the country due to its small form factor and high lumen/watt ratio. The Indian LED lighting market was estimated at Rs.229.04 crore ($49.6 million) in 2009 and is expected to reach Rs.1,843.39 crore ($399.2 million) by 2015 growing at a CAGR of 41.5 per cent.
