Global handset motion sensor shipments are forecast to exceed Rs.4,669.82 crore ($1 billion) by 2014, according to a recent ARCchart study. The handset motion sensor category, which includes accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers and pressure sensors, is seen to grow substantially within the next five years. Shipments are expected to grow from the 27.10 crore units shipped in 2009 to 230 crore units by 2014, with an estimated combined market value of Rs.5,136.80 crore ($1.1 billion).

Accelerometers are expected to drive growth with the highest device penetration in the category, with 55 per cent of phones adopting the component by 2014. Among smart phones, however, gyroscopes are expected to drive growth with 60 per cent of the devices featuring the component in 2014.

The study indicates that the most significant factor that will drive demand for embedded motion sensors will be the development of innovative applications such as augmented reality and in-building navigation, which take advantage of the rotation, acceleration, direction and altitude data generated by these sensors. In addition, the advancements component vendors are making in combining multiple sensors onto a single chip is helping reduce costs and improve time to market.

"In a climate of increased competition and falling ASP, support for advanced sensor interfaces, as Apple has done with gyroscopes in the iPhone 4, provides handset OEMs with clear technical differentiations, and also helps drive the upgrade cycle," said Peter Crocker, the lead analyst on the ARCchart study. "This is becoming particularly important in the smart phone segment of the market which has become highly competitive."
