Maxim rolls out MAX13450E (half duplex) and MAX13451E (full duplex) RS-485 transceivers that integrate 100Ω /120Ω dual-termination resistors allowing remote configuration of the network.

The integrated software-/pin selectable switchable dual-termination resistors eliminate the need for external resistors or DIP switches and support both 24AWG and Cat 5/Cat 6 cables without the signal integrity problems of competitive solutions. These transceivers are well suited for industrial control equipment, IP camera installations, and other RS-485 network applications.

High-speed RS-485 networks require termination resistors at the end of each transmission line. This means that users must manually terminate the end-slave device through an external resistor or DIP switch each time they configure the network. By integrating switchable termination resistors, the MAX13450E/MAX13451E allows users to easily configure the network solely through software. This avoids the process of manual termination, thus enhancing RS-485 network scalability. Additionally, the integrated dual-termination resistors support both 24AWG and Cat 5/Cat 6 cables without the signal integrity problems associated with competitive solutions.

Both devices integrate a low-voltage logic interface (down to 1.62V) to support small-geometry ASICs/FPGAs without the need for additional parts. The MAX13451E has a fault alarm indicator to protect the system against driver errors, and the MAX13450E features a logic-inversion function to reverse the A-B signals in case they are connected incorrectly. Pin-selectable slew-rate limiting improves EMI performance, while robust ESD protection (±30kV, HBM) and an automotive temperature range protect against harsh industrial environments.

The MAX13450E/MAX13451E are available in a 14-pin TSSOP package and are fully specified over the -40°C to +125°C automotive temperature range. Prices start at Rs.87.27 ($1.89) (1000-up, FOB USA).
