The first part of this series discussed the importance of early chip planning and the design challenges involved. The second instalment discusses in detail the early chip planning flow.

Early architecture exploration gives fabless companies an early blueprint to build a product, enabling key early decisions that can help the downstream chip designer to achieve the chip's functionality and quality requirements. Traditionally, most design companies (both fabless and IDMs) explore these different architectures very late, which increases their time-to-market and design cost. Performing early chip planning helps quickly explore the available architecture options to arrive earlier at the right decision.
