Microchip Technology Inc. is extending its portfolio of DACs with single- and dual-channel 8- and 10bit devices that allows customisation of resolution, number of outputs and voltage reference for each application. The devices feature an SPI communication interface, as well as internal and external voltage-reference options with the MCP4801/2, MCP4811/2 (MCP48XX) and MCP4901/2, MCP4911/2 (MCP49XX) DACs.

The MCP48XX family has an internal voltage reference, while the MCP49XX family accepts an external voltage reference. These DACs are appropriate for applications in the consumer (e.g., home appliances, LCD displays, computer peripherals); industrial (e.g., control systems, motor control, metering); and medical markets (e.g., ultrasound, ECG, sensor calibration), among others.

Because the MCP48XX and MCP49XX DACs offer both 8- and 10bit resolution, designers can select the resolution needed for different applications. Additionally, having an integrated voltage reference reduces cost and space, while the external pin provides further design flexibility. Availability in small packages also saves space and makes the DACs easy to use.

"The expansion of our DAC portfolio brings greater competitive solutions to the market," said Bryan J. Liddiard, vice president of marketing with Microchip's analogue and interface products division. "The availability of both 8- and 10bit devices allows for the most cost-effective design."

"Designers often request more flexibility, with regard to DAC resolution in their applications," said Jefferay Lawton, product marketing manager, analogue and interface products division. "With the MCP48XX and MCP49XX families, designers can customise the resolution, number of outputs and voltage reference for each application."

The MCP4801, MCP4811, MCP4901 and MCP4911 are available in 8-pin 2 mm x 3 mm DFN, MSOP, PDIP, SOIC for Rs.37.40, Rs.53.57, Rs.31.86, and Rs.45.72 ($0.81, $1.16, $0.69 and $0.99) each, respectively in 10,000-unit quantities. The MCP4802 and MCP4812 are available in 8-pin MSOP, PDIP, SOIC for Rs.48.95 ($1.06) and Rs.69.73 ($1.51) each, respectively in 10,000-unit quantities. The MCP4902 is available in 14-pin PDIP, SOIC for Rs.42.48 ($0.92) each, and the MCP4912 in 14-pin PDIP, SOIC, TSSOP for Rs.60.49 ($1.31) each, in 10,000-unit quantities.
