austriamicrosystems and Microelectronics Technology Inc. (MTI) released the RU-888-000 USB UHF RFID reader module and the RU-888-100 UHF RFID USB dongle that can turn any USB enabled computer, notebook, netbook, PDA or cell phone into an ISO 18000-6C/EPCglobal C1G2 RFID Reader System.
Both the embedded module and dongle are suited for use in fixed RFID printers, handheld RFID printers, battery-powered mobile RFID printers and handheld readers. The dongle is complete with internal antenna and uses include product authentication, asset and inventory verification, customer facing POS, mobile and portable RFID reader infrastructure solutions. The module offers the same features and performance but is designed for easy integration.
Both MTI products are equipped with austriamicrosystems "Simply Gen 2" UHF RFID technology. MTI leveraged austriamicrosystems chipset to develop a competitive, world wide shippable solution in a timeframe they could not achieve with any other solution. Their competitive price point means that reader costs are no longer the barrier to implementation or Gen 2 market development.
"We were very excited when MTI decided to augment their expertise with the Simply Gen 2 chip set", said Bruce Ulrich, marketing director consumer and communications at austriamicrosystems. "It resulted in MTI being able to develop a very compelling solution in under six months."
Darryn Prince, VP strategic business development at MTI, commented, "MTI is pleased to be working closely with austriamicrosystems in developing innovative RFID reader products specifically targeted for applications requiring best in performance and functional features. Together, MTI and austriamicrosystems provide a level of customisation, miniaturisation, packaging options and affordability—with embedded antennas—not currently available in the market today."
