Improve LCD TV power supply efficiency

In the drive to shrink the profile of LCD TVs, the merits of resonant power converters are attracting increased attention among TV power supply engineers. Resonant converters help miniaturise the power transformers and filter capacitors by enabling very high frequency switching of power supply semiconductor devices. This is achieved by zero voltage switching (ZVS) of the primary side MOSFETs, which significantly reduces switching loss.

Efficiency improves with low switching loss and eases the MOSFET thermal management task. Nonetheless, a significant impediment to further reduction of the equipment�s profile lies in inefficiency of the power supply output diodes. This calls for the use of surface mount MOSFETs as replacements for heat sink backed output diodes in resonant power supplies of larger screen size TVs. However, this has so far seen very limited adoption due to the timing complexity, cost and unsatisfactory performance of the existing synchronous rectifier solutions. This article reveals how ultimate power conversion efficiency can be realised by a self-timing voltage detection synchronous MOSFET control scheme.
