Crosspoint switch cuts power dissipation up to 54%

Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. has added the VSC3340 asynchronous 40x40-port crosspoint switch to its broadcast video IC portfolio that offers high-performance at low-power.

The VSC3340 switch delivers power scaling Green Modes that reduce power dissipation by as much as 54 per cent over existing products. With its 260Gbps capacity, the VSC3340 is essential for broadcast video equipment requiring higher density, lower power system designs. The VSC3340 exceeds video requirements for professional broadcast routers/switchers and HDMI switching through its full support of HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort and SMPTE protocols.

The device's energy savings are 95mW per channel in 3.2Gbit mode. In this design, only those channels with active signals dissipate power. Integrated with Vitesse's FlexEQ adaptive equalisation technology, the VSC3340 is well-suited for countering signal degradation over various transmission media types and lengths.

With its programmable input signal equalisation and output pre-emphasis, the device can be optimised for a variety of cable, PCB or backplane lengths and signal conditions. The switch is programmable with a standard two-wire or four-wire interface.

The VSC3340 is available for Rs.6,926.55 ($150) each in volume.
