Better, greener life with less power

Fuel cell, a rising new energy, is projected to boast a world market worth Rs.8896.22 crore ( $1.9 billion) by 2013. The market includes automotive, residential and small & medium electricity generation, mobile electronics, hydrogen energy, etc. Local development in this field is still relatively weak. But the prospect is positive, as major companies like Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDI and LG Electronics are entering the market.

Though relatively high cost and weak durability during long-term use are still the roadblocks against its commercialisation, the fuel cell is emerging as one of the major next generation energy, as it has the potential to provide clean energy with efficiency 40 to 60 per cent higher than that of conventional electricity generation system. Global automotive companies are turning their attention to the fuel cell as an alternative energy source to reduce air pollution and dependency on fossil fuel. In Korea, the demand for automotive fuel cell is expected to show steady growth until it achieves complete economic feasibility by 2015.

Residential power generation (RPG) industry is first expected to see the commercialisation of small-scale CHP (combined heat and power) system for general homes or commercial buildings. Currently, local companies like GS Fuel Cell Co., Ltd. and FuelCellPower Inc. are developing the residential fuel cells. In the medium and large applications for building CHP and industrial power generations, various fuel cells such as PAFC, PEMFC, MCFC and SOFC are being developed

Miniature DMFC power sources are being developed for mobile fuel cells for the next generation communication devices by local company like LG Chemical Ltd. Samsung Electronics is developing LPG fuel cell power for leisure and Samsung Engineering has developed PEMFC power generator using small hydrogen generator.

Touch sensing
It seems the world trend for display is heading towards eco-friendly touch screen. More than 100 crore (1 billion) units of electronics products to be shipped globally after 2010 will have advanced human interfaces, projects Steve Gerber, a director of Human Interface Products, Silicon Labs. And a significant portion of it would be touch-screen product, as it can dramatically enhance user experience.

The prospect for the touch screen will continue to be very bright, as the display is heading for touch technology, said Huh, Yum, a president of Silicon Mitus, a local power management IC (PMIC) company, in the Analogue Semiconductor Leaders' Forum 2009. In 2010, "major companies with ample funds are going to enter the touchscreen module market, intensifying the struggle for survival between the small and medium companies and conglomerates, said Lee, Bang-Won, president of ATLab Inc., an optical and touch sensor company. Major companies like Samsung Electronics and LG Display have already introduced 10.1" and 13.3" capacitive type TSIC (Touch Sensor In Cell) LCD panels. The competition is expected to become even fiercer as Taiwan companies with competitiveness in PC manufacturing enter touch-screen market.
