Gain blocks target a variety of wireless apps

Avago Technologies has unveiled three new flat-gain, high-linearity, low-noise, gain blocks designed for use as a broadband gain block or RF driver amplifier MMIC with a range of 40 to 6,000MHz.

The three gain blocks in the MGA-30x89 series are housed in a 4.5mm x 4.1mm x 1.5mm industry standard SOT-89 package. They cover frequency bands from 40MHz to 6,000MHz and need only a simple DC biasing match. There is no need for any additional RF matching components to achieve wide bandwidth performance. Avago is a supplier of analogue interface components for communications, industrial and consumer applications.

The ease-of-use and extended broadband performance of Avago's MGA-30x89 series makes these gain blocks a suitable choice for designers of cellular devices, WiMAX wireless base stations, satellite and cable TV STBs, and a variety of other wireless applications that operate within the 40 to 6,000MHz frequency range. The flat gain and high linearity features of these devices are achieved through the use of Avago's proprietary 0.25µm GaAs enhancement-mode pHEMT process. The built-in temperature compensated internal bias circuit also provides stable current over temperature and process threshold voltage variations. Additionally, the broadband flat gain feature is also ideal for use in other cellular infrastructure designs that require the same driver amplifier or gain block for different frequencies.

Key features of the three gain blocks include high linearity broadband performance; built in temperature compensated internal bias circuitry; no RF matching components required; use of GaAs E-pHEMT technology; single, fixed 5V supply; uniformity in product specifications; MSL-1 Pb- and halogen-free; high MTTF for base station applications.

The MGA-30789 is designed for applications that operate in the 40MHz to 2,600MHz frequency range. At the typical operating condition of 5V and 110mA it delivers performance of 11.8dB gain, 40dBm output third order intercept point (OIP3), 24.5dBm output power at 1dB gain compression (P1dB), and 3.5dB noise figure at 3500MHz.

The MGA-30889 is designed for applications that operate also within the 40MHz to 2,600MHz frequency range. At the typical operating condition of 5V and only 65mA it delivers performance of 15.5dB gain, 37dBM OIP3, 20dBm P1dB, and 2.1dB noise figure at 900MHz.

The third, the MGA-30989, is designed for applications that operate within the 2,000MHz to 6,000MHz frequency range. At the typical operating condition of 5V and 56mA it delivers performance of 12.4dB gain, 36dBM OIP3, 22dBM P1db, and 2dB noise figure at 3,500MHz.

Avago's MGA-30789 and MGA-30889/30989 flat gain, high linearity gain blocks are available now with pricing starting from Rs.78.99 ($1.69) and Rs.58.43 ($1.25), respectively in 10,000-unit volumes.
