Eight-channel DACs cuts need for external amplifier

Texas Instruments Inc. has introduced six new DACs available in 12-, 14- and 16bit versions and with either SPI or parallel interface.

The eight-channel DAC87x8 family features a typical power consumption in normal mode of 14.8mW/channel, dropping to <170µW/channel in power-down mode. An internal 4x or 6x programmable gain provides a bipolar ±16V or unipolar 0V to 33V output range across eight channels. This eliminates the need for an external amplifier, saving cost and reducing board space by nearly 24 per cent over competitive devices in ATE, instrumentation, programmable logic controllers, and machine and motion control applications.

The converters offer 3x faster settling time (10µµs) than competitive devices while maintaining maximum integral non-linearity (INL) accuracy of ±4 LSB and typical low glitch energy of 1nVs. The DAC87x8 also comes with built-in user calibration balances the system offset of the entire signal chain.

In addition, the DACs feature zero error thermocouple (TC) and gain error TC of #177;3ppm/°C that increase system accuracy and repeatability. Two offset DACs allow for either symmetrical or asymmetrical shifting of the output voltage range, allowing a user to customise the application's DAC output without sacrificing resolution.

Customers can also speed time-to-market with compatible TI devices: the REF5050 single voltage reference, Stellaris ARM Cortex-M3-based microcontrollers, as well as C2000 Piccolo and Delfino MCUs for real-time control.

The 16bit DAC8718 (SPI interface) and DAC8728 (parallel interface) are available now in a 7mm x 7mm (SPI version) or 8mm x 8mm (parallel version) QFN package. A 10mm x 10mm TQFP package is also available. Pricing starts at Rs.1,025.98 ($21.95) in 1,000-unit quantities. Two additional, pin-compatible devices in the family, the 14bit DAC82x8 and the 12bit DAC77x8, are priced at Rs.839.02 ($17.95) and Rs.558.57 ($11.95), respectively, in 1,000-unit quantities.
