UHF devices deliver high-distance wireless to cars

Texas Instruments Inc. rolls a low-cost, sub-1GHz device family designed for wireless and car access systems. The CC11x1-Q1 family includes UHF transmitters, receivers and transceivers. With a simple RF design and an easy-to-use SPI interface, designs with the CC11x1-Q1 family do not need external filters or switches, which results in a low-cost design.

TI has created the family to meet consumers' demand for timely visibility into their vehicle status to ensure their car is properly maintained. The wide range of wireless applications in automobiles includes tyre pressure monitoring, auxiliary heating remote control and key features such as garage door openers or the standard remote control.

Key features and benefits of the CC11x1-Q1 family include pin-to-pin and software compatibility that allows easy migration from unidirectional to bidirectional systems with a simple software upgrade. They operate in the extended temperature range (up to +125°C) required as vehicle temperatures flex, and all parts are qualified in accordance with AEC-Q100 temperature Grade 1. Also, designers can build high reliable data links with a fast frequency hopping scheme (88s switching time) utilising the fractional-N concept, and no external filters, switches or voltage-controlled oscillators are required, resulting in only a few external components and low-cost designs.

Typical receiver sensitivity is up to -114dBm, providing an increased communication range. Programmable data rate from 1.2-250kBaud brings flexibility to all applications with ASK, OOK, FSK, GFSK and MSK modulations, and automatic frequency compensation adds to ease of use and reliability.

An embedded packet handler supports sync word detection and automatic CRC allows for easy design and relaxed MCU requirements. Plus, digital RSSI output opens the door for further applications.

Pricing of the CC11x1-Q1 device family starts at Rs.53.70 ($1.10) for 100k of the CC1151IRHBRG4Q1. These devices are available in a QFN 5mm x 5mm, 32-pin package, resulting in the smallest board space for UHF transceivers on the market.
