There will only be room for four to five players in the PC business in a few years and consolidation will continue rapidly until there is an even bigger shakeout.

This is according to Gianfranco Lanci, CEO and president of Acer Inc., who also suggested that over the next few quarters, Acer will beat Dell and become the second largest manufacturer by volume of PCs, netbooks and notebooks.

He also struck an upbeat note for the PC market generally, saying that demand for PCs was increasing.

However, he cautioned that profitability was still a major issue, and that there is no room in the PC industry for more than four or five significant players.

Lanci said growing demand in Europe and Asia, and notably China, would offset low demand in other markets, and that Acer's sales this year will remain on par with that achieved last year. "We are also expecting renewed growth for next year, said Lanci. "It seems we have lost one year in growth due to this financial crisis."

The Taiwan PC maker had revenues of $16.9 billion (Rs.82,498.06 crore) in 2008.

Besides overtaking Dell, Lanci said Acer would also close the gap with the market leader, HP, taking into account shipments of netbooks, notebooks and desktops.
