Micrel Inc. has announced an addition to its Hyper Speed Control family of adaptive on-time controllers. The MIC2174 is a DC/DC controller that is capable of high delta V operation (Vin=40V, Vout=0.8V) and of driving up to 25A of load current. The Hyper Speed Control architecture reduces required output capacitance and allows for high transient response. The solution is suited for industrial equipment power supply, automotive applications, computer peripherals and distributed DC power systems.

"By pushing the maximum input voltage to 40V, applications that require high delta V operation can take advantage of our unique architecture," stated John Lee, director of power products, Micrel.

The MIC2174 operates at 300kHz constant frequency and achieves greater than 94 per cent efficiency, over a broad load range. The device is easy to use and is stable even with a zero-ESR output capacitor, making designs very robust and offering the ability to scale down external capacitors. The MIC2174 Hyper Speed Control DC/DC controller operates over a wide input supply range of 3V to 40V and also offers cycle-by-cycle current limiting for FET protection. While the UVLO circuitry ensures proper operation under power-sag conditions to prevent the MOSFETs from overheating, the Soft Start feature reduces the inrush current. The MIC2174 Hyper Speed Control controller is available in a 10-pin MSOP package with a junction operating range from -40°C to +125°C.

The MIC2174 is available in volume quantities with pricing starting at Rs.48.61 ($1) for 1K quantities.
