Tiny LDO regulators eliminate output capacitors

Torex Semiconductor Ltd claims a reduction in mounting area of about 44 per cent—compared to the company's previous products—in the XC6501 series of low-supply current, high-speed LDO regulators which don't need an output capacitor.
By incorporating the XC6501 series in a new USPN-4 package (0.9mm x 1.2mm x 0.4mm), a reduction of about 44 per cent has been achieved over the previous USP-4 package (1.2mm x 1.6mm x 0.6mm).
The output voltage range is 1.2V to 5V, in steps of 0.05V. Maximum output current is 200mA and the input voltage range is 1.4V-6V. Internal phase compensation enables stable operation even without an output capacitor. Space saving is achieved through a reduced component count and the use of a small package. The XC6501 series has both low supply current and high-speed characteristics, and excellent load-transient response.
Additional features of the LDO include high ripple rejection (50dB@f=1kHz, Vout=2.8 V) at a low supply current (13µA@Vout=2.8V). The series also includes an ON/OFF function as well as a current limiter (300mA, typical) and short-circuit protection circuit.
