India, China mobile markets prep 3G launch

India 3G soft launch
Meanwhile, India is currently witnessing the first 3G service soft launches by MTNL and BSNL in select cities with wider deployments expected once the licence auctions have been completed later this year. However, unlike China, an all IP Network in India is not a currently available option as operators must utilise the existing transmission infrastructure, all of which is TDM-Legacy/SDH. Therefore the 3G networks must be designed by use of the existing resources. Furthermore the IP/MPLS core networks built by the various Indian operators will face significant issues coping with the huge growth in backhaul traffic triggered by 3G deployments in urban areas.

Due to the massive sparsely populated regions, which have limited fixed line resources, the scenario that is necessary in India is backhaul over PDH microwave. In this case, Abis optimisation will be required to reduce cellular transmission bandwidth while maintaining service quality as well as enabling controlled introduction of early 3G services with no additional capital investment. Abis optimisation can reduce the bandwidth required for 2G traffic by more than 50 per cent, freeing up what's left for 3G. Additionally more aggregation sites will need to be deployed throughout the network thereby allowing the growing data traffic to be multiplexed and delivered to the network core more efficiently without requiring massive investment in infrastructure.

It's clear to see that operators in the two countries face very different challenges in the deployment of 3G mobile broadband networks. However, if they successfully negotiate these obstacles then their telecommunications environment will be forever changed and the affect on the economy, theirs and the world's, could be even more profound.
