Zylog Systems India Ltd (ZSIL) has chosen Aptilo Networks to provide the back-end systems enabling its unique Wi5 wireless broadband offering throughout India.

Zylog's Wi5 service is now live in a part of Chennai, which will soon become the first Wi-Fi-enabled city in India. Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad will be added in the next year covering approximately 1,600km² and hundreds of thousands of users. ZSIL has obtained a category 'A' Internet service provider licence to operate in all of India's DoT circles, and is planning to blanket a total of 40 cities in India with a footprint of more than 12,000km² and millions of subscribers within the next five years.

Broadband Internet penetration in India is very low at 0.5 per cent, with 60 lakh broadband subscribers in the beginning of 2009. There is a vast segment of population that does not have access to broadband primarily due to availability and prohibitive costs. The Wi5 wireless broadband service will empower the population with convenient, high-speed and affordable broadband Internet, ushering in a new era of connectivity for India.

Working with Aptilo's service management platform, the Wi5 service will enable customers to access high-speed wireless broadband easily through their laptops, desktops or mobile devices by subscribing to the Wi5 service on the move. ZSIL has adopted a Wi-Fi mesh network architecture, which makes the wireless network a continuous one. With the Wi5-Aptilo solution, customers enjoy a truly mobile, high-speed, highly secure and easy-to-use wireless broadband connectivity.

"The emerging Indian broadband market is on the cusp of a huge growth curve. Today Wi-Fi is perfectly positioned to provide instant broadband access from devices that are already available, in a safe, secure and reliable manner. Wi-Fi is well suited to becoming a strong product differentiator for the millions of handhelds, mobile Internet devices, gaming consoles as well as laptops and PCs that are being sold every month and we are delighted to have a first-mover advantage in the Wi-Fi space through the launch of Zylog's Wi5," said Janakiraman R, chief operating officer and director, ZSIL. "Our long term plan is to achieve penetration in remote areas using our low cost technology and a mix of distribution models including franchise model."

The Aptilo Service Management Platform and multiple Aptilo Access Controller access gateways are handling Subscriber Management; authentication, authorisation and accounting; policy management; QoS and more. Aptilo has brought in partners Informatics International Ltd (AvaBill) for delivering systems for operational support as well as pre-paid/post-paid billing, and Nexge for delivering VoIP services.

"We wanted to build a leading first-class service from the very beginning," said Janakiraman R. "It was only natural for us to turn to a leading first-class vendor such as Aptilo that has been proven in large-scale implementations like ours time and time again."

"We are proud to partner with Zylog for this important project bringing true Internet freedom to India," said Jan Sjonell, managing director, Asia/Middle East, Aptilo. "We look forward to the expansion of this project working side-by-side with AvaBill and Nexge."
