Stackpole Electronics Inc. is offering two new circuit protection devices that comply with IEC61000-4-2. The ESD/ESDU Series are high speed and ultra high-speed transient suppression chips with an 8KV protection level for direct contact and 15KV for air. The ESA/ESAU series are chip array versions of these suppression devices. According to the press release, both series employ a unique air gap technology that achieves the lowest possible capacitance, thereby reducing response time significantly. These products are designed for protection of high speed data ports such as USB 2.0 and HDMI.

The chips are available in 0402 and 0603 sizes and operating voltages from 3.3V to 25V. Trigger voltages are 150V and 250V, and clamping voltages are typically 17V and 25V. The chip arrays are available in the 0603 by four size and have the same operating, trigger and clamping voltages as the chips. Both parts offer low leakage currents of less than 1nA and response times of well below 1ms, due to the inherent low capacitance. The ESD and ESA products have a typical capacitance of 0.2pF, while the ESDU and ESAU products have typical capacitances around 0.05pF. Both products are designed to withstand in excess of 1,000 pulses with outstanding reliability and repeatability.

These series are ideal choices for USB 2.0 and IEEE1394 port protection for notebook PCs, cell phones, PDAs, digital cameras, printers, scanners, plasma display panels, HDTVs, LCD displays and monitors and any other device with high-speed data ports.

They are available in standard 7-inch reels and are RoHS-compliant. Pricing varies with size and clamping voltage, and ranges from Rs.1.47 ($0.03) to Rs.2.94 ($0.06) for the ESD/ESDU in full reel quantities and Rs.9.80 ($0.20) to Rs.12.25 ($0.25) for the ESA / ESAU in full reel quantities.
