Combination IC shipments to rise by 30% in '09

Keywords:combination IC  consumer electronics  wireless technology

Combination ICs can be utilised by OEMs to provide additional wireless capabilities with relatively low additional cost, silicon and power demands. Despite the current economic crisis, IMS Research forecast 2009 to show a 30% increase in combinations IC shipments, compared with 2008.

Consumer spending on consumer electronics is down, affecting some product areas more than others. Cellular handsets, digital cameras and gaming equipment are amongst those devices forecast to show reduced shipments in 2009. IMS Research anticipates that the annual world total of these three device types alone will fall by almost 10% between 2008 and 2009.

Lisa Arrowsmith, connectivity market analyst at IMS Research, explains, "Despite the threat of a shrinking market for wireless ICs, few of the surviving wireless technology companies appear to have reduced their R&D efforts in the combination IC arena. This could be because declining consumer electronics revenues for certain devices are placing increasing pressure on OEMs to stimulate the market for their products by offering increased functionality, while maintaining profit margins by keeping additional costs low".
