Nevertheless a wealth of new kids of systems are coming, requiring plenty of work in optimised software.

"We're seeing all sorts of requests to get content and connectivity to different devices—gas pumps, ARM machines—we're seeing Adobe Flash in all these devices," said Anup Murarka, director of technology strategy and partner development in Adobe Systems' platform group.

Adobe and ARM are working on a version optimised for ARM processor of Flash 10, the basis of much of the video on the Web. The smart phone is the primary target of that work although the duo expects it will be used broadly in mobile devices.

One venture capitalist at the conference said there are untapped opportunities for systems tuned to vertical markets. He described one start-up creating a wireless device for writing prescriptions.

"These are the kinds of things that get us really excited," said Rich Redelfs, general partner of Foundation Capital. "We look to build multi-hundred million dollar businesses, and there are a number of those in vertical markets," he said.
