Mobile software, cleantech seen as 'hot' sectors

Mobile software and cleantech has joined digital media as the hottest technologies which investors are likely to be watching in the coming year, according to a survey by corporate finance group Cobalt, which focuses on the technology, media and telecoms (TMT) sectors.

Digital media fared best and is growing, but mobile software held up well compared to a similar survey last year.

Not surprisingly, Cobalt says caution has dampened investment enthusiasm, but the survey indicates that 55 per cent of investors still anticipate investing more or similar amounts in 2009 than 2008, with 45 per cent expecting to invest less.

One of the better things to come out of the survey is that investors still consider the technology, media and telecoms, or TMT sector, to be a good source for long term growth. And despite the recession, strategic commitment to the sector continues with nearly 70 per cent of investors anticipating their TMT teams to remain the same or grow this year.

However, while investments are continuing, 74 per cent of investors expect exits to be more difficult to achieve in 2009 with a significant fall in the number of exits in the next 12 months.
