ASML Holding NV shot up to the No.2 spot in Gartner, Inc.'s 2008 worldwide fab tool market rankings, replacing Tokyo Electron Ltd. ASML's advance is credited to the strong demand for 193-nm immersion steppers.

Applied Materials, Inc., meanwhile, maintained its position at the top despite a bad year. Last year, Applied accounted for 13.2 per cent of the market, despite a 39.8 per cent decline in revenue, according to Gartner.

Teradyne, Inc. has jumped into the top 10 and captured the No. 1 spot in the test markets.

Worldwide semiconductor capital equipment spending totalled Rs.1.53 lakh crore ($30.7 billion) in 2008, a 31.7 per cent decline from the previous year, according to final results by Gartner. In major segments, wafer fab equipment declined 32.8 per cent, while back-end equipment decreased 27.2 per cent, as both areas were hit hard by reductions in capital spending.

Table: Top 10 worldwide semiconductor manufacturing equipment vendors by revenue estimates (US$M), according to Gartner. Data includes revenue from acquisitions in 2008 for the entire year, while 2007 data is before acquisitions. Growth is organic as well as through acquisitions.

VLSI Research, Inc. recently listed its fab tool rankings as well.
