Mobile phone batteries have a lot of demands on their limited power. Ambient light sensors offer manufacturers of these and other devices significant power saving, by varying display brightness; this also makes the display more appealing to users. These benefits will lead to a fast growth in their use.

IMS Research analyst Jamie Fox noted, in his recent report, "The market for ambient light sensors is forecast to see explosive growth from $83 million (Rs.412.67 crore) in 2007 to $264 million (Rs.1,312.59 crore) in 2013".

At present they are predominantly used in cellular handsets. Suppliers that spoke to IMS Research in recent months all reported most of their sales were in this application. Smart phones and other high-end phones such as the iPhone are adopting these sensors, but they are not used in lower priced handsets.

Further, ambient light sensors can be used with any type of display, and therefore also have a great opportunity for future business in applications such as notebook computers, TVs and automotive displays.

Current suppliers of ambient light sensors include Avago, Intersil, Microsemi, Osram, Panasonic, Rohm, Sharp, TAOS, Toshiba and Vishay.
