This application note by Cypress tackles different fibre optic circuit design approaches used in high-speed serial communications for an electromagnetically noisy environment. With the introduction of the PSoC mixed-signal device, simple communications are inevitable. The PSoC contains the resources for two full UARTs.

This application note deals with interfacing a single UART to a fibre optic connection. The connection runs at the maximum allowable UART speed, plus there is an alternate circuit that runs slower but uses a lower cost interface. This application note assumes a rudimentary knowledge of the PSoC and PSoC Designer software.

Fibre optics would not even be considered if it did not offer distinct advantages over traditional copper media. This document also discusses the benefits of fibre optics with regard to information-carrying capacity, low power loss, electromagnetic immunity, data security, weight, size, and safety.
