PCIe switches enable multi-host systems

A new approach to switching architecture has emerged. It is said to solve key system problems previously preventing the adoption of PCI Express (PCIe) as the primary system interconnect in AdvancedTCA and proprietary bladed communications, embedded and server/storage applications. PCIe has become the de facto standard for local and chip-to-chip interconnect in these applications. However, its reach as the primary system interconnect for systems with distributed intelligence has been minimal due to limitations in enabling multi-root system architectures and management of system resources.

The solution—a multi-root partitionable PCIe switch architecture—breaks the PCIe protocol and switching tasks down to their most basic elements. It also leverages the simplest transactions across multiple instances to arrive at a PCIe switching solution worthy of new classification.
