Elpida in talks on possible merger

Elpida Memory is in talks with Taiwanese DRAM makers including Powerchip, ProMOS Technologies and Rexchip, on a possible merger as well as some other options.

Japan's Elpida shares jumped more than 6 per cent after Japanese public broadcaster NHK reported earlier that the world's No. 3 DRAM chip maker was in merger talks with Taiwanese DRAM makers and aimed to seek financial support from the Taiwan government.

Makers of DRAM chips, used mainly in personal computers, are battling a long supply glut and now a slump in demand amid a spreading global recession that is causing them to lose money on each chip they make.

"We are discussing several possibilities, but nothing has been decided," Elpida spokesman Hideki Saito said.

Taiwan's government said this month it had asked ProMOS to resubmit a reorganisation plan jointly filed with Elpida, apparently seeking assurances of support for the domestic sector.

Elpida shares were up 6.2 per cent at 566 yen as of 0059 GMT, against a 2.1 per cent fall in the benchmark Nikkei average.
