1-Gbit XDR DRAM based on x32-bit debuts

Elpida Memory Inc. claims the industry's first 1Gbit XDR DRAM based on x32bit configuration.

The XDR product features a speed of 7.2GHz, which is faster than any GDDR5 memory chip, and provides a data transfer rate of 28.8GBps with a single device, according to Elpida. Applications include high-bandwidth, high-performance full HD-capable applications as game consoles, DTVs and Blu-ray disc recorders.

The XDR device is manufactured using Elpida's 65nm process technology and uses a 1.5V low voltage operation and an x32bit interface. It provides a one-chip solution that, compared with two x16bit configuration 512Mbit XDR DRAMs, consumes 35 per cent to 40 per cent less power and requires less space, according to Elpida.

Sample shipments have already started and mass production is scheduled to begin in April 2009.
