Transmit signal serially at 10Gbps

The goal of building a 10Gb backplane interconnection system which maximises the ratio of signal to interference is a monumental task requiring a focused engineering effort to achieve. The trend in electronic product design has been to solicit and utilise increasingly sophisticated design tools and experts in order to implement seemingly complex high-speed designs. Such analysis can be costly in terms of time and money, but in the end it can speed up product design and lower product risk.

During the development of the 10GBASE-KR specification, it was demonstrated through analysis that many challenges must be addressed in developing a system where any backplane channel can support transmitting a signal serially at 10Gbps. This article will review these scenarios in an attempt to familiarise the reader with the dangers of assumptions regarding system conditions.
